چکیده

BACKGROUND Facial function is important in accompaniment of patients operated on vestibular schwannoma (VS). OBJECTIVE To evaluate long term facial nerve function in patients undergoing VS resection and to correlate tumor size and facial function in a long-term follow-up. METHOD Transversal study of 20 patients with VS operated by the retrosigmoid approach. House-Brackmann Scale was used preoperatively, immediately after surgery and in a long-term follow-up. Student t test was applied for statistic analysis. RESULTS In the immediate postoperative evaluation, 65% of patients presented FP of different grades. Improvement of facial nerve function (at least of one grade) occurred in 53% in the long-term follow-up. There was statistically significant difference in facial nerve outcome in long-term follow-up when tumor size was considered (p<0.05). CONCLUSION The majority of patients had improvement of FP in a long-term follow-up and tumor size was detected to be a factor associated with the postoperative prognostic.

Long-term facial nerve function following facial reanimation after translabyrinthine vestibular schwannoma surgery: A comparison between sural grafting and VII–XII anastomosis

The aim of this study was to compare the recovery of long-term facial nerve function between patients who received sural grafts and those who underwent hypoglossal-facial anastomosis techniques following translabyrinthine vestibular schwannoma surgery. This study included 25 patients with vestibular schwannomas treated with translabyrinthine tumor removal. All patients had large tumors with a m...

Surgical Findings to Differentiate Between Facial Nerve Schwannoma and Vestibular Schwannoma

OBJECTIVES Facial nerve schwannomas may be misdiagnosed as vestibular schwannomas (VSs) if the tumor is confined to the internal auditory canal (IAC) without involvement the geniculated ganglion or labyrinthine segment of facial nerve. Because facial nerve schwannomas may be misdiagnosed as VSs, we investigated the differences between the two. METHODS The study included 187 patients with a pr...

BACKGROUND Intracranial vestibular schwannoma still remain to be difficulty for its unique microsurgical technique and preservation of neuro-function, as well as reducing common complications that may arise in surgery. METHODS We consecutively enrolled 657 unilateral giant (>4 cm diameter) vestibular schwannoma patients treated in Huashan Hospital via the suboccipital retrosigmoid approach in...
